01:28 am I haven't posted anything personal here in a long, long time, and I've finally realized I probably will never get back into the habit. I enjoy it too much hanging out in Facebook instead. I don't care if that's uncool, it's just how I would rather spend my online time. So while I will keep this as a journal archive, and may occasionally post some important news, if you want to interact with me, that's where you'll find me. <3

08:18 pm - Bell Hollow’s Prids Cover Released
Bell Hollow's luminescent version of The Prids' "Contact," recorded in late 2008, is now available on the Prids tribute album "Dots to Connect: The Music of The Prids," the brainchild of our own Hillary Johnson. This digital-only release brings together 18 bands (including A Place to Bury Strangers, Swann Danger, Autodrone, Entertainment, Sleepmask, and Veil Veil Vanish), donating their time and energy to help their pals in Portland. All proceeds go directly to The Prids to help deal with medical and other expenses resulting from their devastating 2008 van accident. 03:59 pm - Bell Hollow R.I.P. Official statement:
Bell Hollow’s digital-only EP Foxgloves Extras was released by five03 Records at the end of December 2008, and is now available on iTunes, Rhapsody, and eMusic. The EP includes all five of the remixes previously heard on RCRD LBL, plus three previously unreleased Bell Hollow originals from the 2007 Foxgloves sessions (“Peru,” “Late at Night,” and “Throw Me”) which longtime fans might recall from the band’s early live performances
We regret to also announce that this marks the end of the road for Bell Hollow. Frontman Nick Niles left the group in December to pursue his own direction, and the band have chosen not to continue. A posthumous EP of Bell Hollow’s final recordings may be released later in 2009.
To our many loyal friends and fans, the great bands we shared stages with, and the journalists and DJs who so kindly promoted our music, we say a heartfelt thanks and farewell.

Check out my cheesy childhood magnum opus of monster moviedom:
The Curse of the Pharaoh (1979)
Bear in mind that me and my school chums were 13 years old, and our technology was very limited in that archaic pre-digital age (Super 8 silent film with separately recorded audiotape soundtracks), and you might be able to enjoy the fiendish humor. I wanted to make monster movies, and so I did.
I will be posting YouTube links to the other five Monsters in Sneakers Productions short films that preceded Pharaoh here as well, including our first effort, a hilarious remake of The Blob.
Special thanks to Barrett Hiatt for his stalwart work yesterday in video and sound re-editing. They could not have been digitized without him. Current Mood: busy Current Music: The House of Love - "Real Animal"

02:54 pm - Last of the free Bell Hollow remixes Peter Du Charme works his charm on “The Bottle Tree” A belated holiday gift from Bell Hollow: Please enjoy the final remix in our Foxgloves Extras series on RCRD LBL. Acclaimed composer/producer/DJ Peter Du Charme delivers a delightful electro-new wave alchemization of “The Bottle Tree.”
Download “The Bottle Tree (Peter Du Charme Remix)" and see how many classic dancefloor nods you can spot with your ears!
Peter Du Charme has an extensive resume since achieving fame a decade ago (under alter ego Master Cylinder) as the creator of “Jung at Heart” (the soundtrack to VW Jetta’s classic 1999 “Synchronicity” TV commercial). He has composed further ad music for the likes of Red Bull and Converse, has been a member of the bands Junior Communist Club and New Prime Numbers, and has produced, engineered, and/or remixed a variety of artists, including We Are Scientists, John Wesley Harding’s Dynablob 4: Swings and Roundabouts, Star Ghost Dog’s albums Happylove and The Great Outdoors, Paula Kelley’s “Some Sucker’s Life, Pt. 1,” Clem Snide, Los Straitjackets, Eugene Mirman, Special Pillow, and Megalynk3.
Bell Hollow cover The Prids Bell Hollow’s version of The Prids’ “Contact” will be released early in the new year, as part of the benefit tribute album Dots to Connect: The Music of The Prids.
Foxgloves hits #5 on BigTakeover.com Steve Holtje over at The Big Takeover was kind enough to place Bell Hollow at #5 in his “Best New Rock Albums of 2008” list.
He quotes from his earlier review for Interborough Rock Tribune: ”There is a dark, brooding strain of British ‘80s rock running from the Cure and the Smiths through Chameleons to Kitchens of Distinction that…doesn’t get as much critical respect as post-punk or shoegaze…. Much of [Bell Hollow’s] allure is due to the fantastic guitar sounds Greg Fasolino gets: chiming, shimmering, billowing chords and serrating solos (check out the closing “Lowlights”) that fill the soundscape over throbbing bass (Christopher Bollman) and the steady pulses of new drummer Todd Karasik (ex-My Favorite). Equally attractive are the high, keening vocals of Nick Niles; he inevitably gets compared to Morrissey, and while there’s certainly grounds for that, Niles’s style is without affectation. The match between the contour of the melodies and the timbre of his delivery of them is perfect…”
Steve also picked BH at #7 on the CultureCatch site. Check out more of his picks in his columns for BigTakeover.com and CultureCatch.com and download a free pdf of IRT mag here.
BH en Francais For those who can read French, there is an interesting Foxgloves review on the MuzzArt site. Bell Hollow also received a nice nod from NotesUnearthed.com.

My first real band, Queens punks The Oppressed NYC, are set to play our first (and probably last) ever gig, reuniting all four original members: Frank N (later of Concrete Witchdoctors) on vox, Paul “Goph” Grabowski (later of Antichrist Newsboys) on bass, Chris Piccione on drums, and myself on guitar.
Forming in autumn 1981 at Archbishop Molloy High School, the band lasted for an entire year, but never recorded or played out.
A brief 25th anniversary reunion at Astoria Soundworks studio in 2006 led to recordings of five songs, including the often-covered (and usually uncredited) minor classic “I Hate Holidays.”
And now, finally, a gig…
The Oppressed NYC will appear tomorrow night at this fierce, frantic festival:

This remix is available for free download on RCRD LBL, and along with its three predecessors (and next month's Peter du Charme mix of "The Bottle Tree"), will be part of Bell Hollow's imminent digital-only Foxgloves Extras EP (five03 Records).

12:00 pm - Bell Hollow release “Getting On In Years (Phofo Remix)”

Acclaimed indie-pop/hip-hop producer Phofo has taken Bell Hollow favorite "Getting On In Years" in a totally unpredictable direction, revving up the song to a groovy froth spiced with peppy horns and a summery dance groove.
Download "Getting On In Years (Phofo Remix)" and listen for yourself!
Phofo is best known for his co-production (with Prince Paul) on MC Paul Barman's 2002 album Paullelujah, and has also produced and remixed such artists as MF Doom, The Brittle Stars, I Am the World Trade Center, Mr. Len, Mariachi Los Toros, Jean Grey, Mr. Dead, and Starchild Excalibur, as well as Bell Hollow drummer Todd Karasik's former band My Favorite. Phofo's film and television work includes the scores to CBS cartoon Sushi Pack and animated feature Los Campeones de La Lucha Libra. He also serves as the editor of Samplinglaw.com and as music consultant for public radio program This American Life.
As with the previous two remixes in this series, this track is available for free download on RCRD LBL, and will also be featured on December's digital-only Foxgloves Extras EP (five03 Records).

 The Anticipation of Rudolf
I am actually really looking forward to watching the first episode of "Clone Wars" with Rudi on TV tomorrow night. We saw the movie on opening weekend of course, and unlike most critics, I liked it alot. Maybe it's that I can see the films through my "Star Wars"-obsessed nine-year-old son's eyes, but I kinda enjoy going against the grain. And by grain, I mean the endless stream of deprecation and dismissal of all post-original trilogy SW stuff. It's ridiculous, all this "George Lucas ruined my childhood memories" garbagio. As if the original films were such serious entertainment (in the sense of being high art). I was there on opening day for the first movie, when it was still just called "Star Wars," and I can still watch all the films, new and old, with Rudi as if I was still that 11-year-old boy back in '77. And while if forced to pick, I still think "Empire Strikes Back" is my favorite, I like all the films. In some ways, I enjoy the later films more, as I am less interested in Luke and Leia and Han, and far more interested in the Jedi Council, in Yoda and Windu and Dooku and Kit Fisto. I like McGregor's Obi-Wan as much or more than Guiness'. I like the cool monsters and the political stuff and, I suppose, just the Jedi in general, that there's more of them and more about them (though Rudi cares most about the Fetts). Sharing Rudi's fun has led me to start reading the more interesting books and graphic novels, and again, I am more interested in the characters and events of the Clone Wars period than the original trilogy. So bring tomorrow's show on...
This guy in "Entertainment Weekly" was the only one who got it right this summer:..

02:05 pm Last night I received a most pleasant surprise in the mail: my first-ever royalty check, from BMI. It was only $39.27, but I was excited anyway. The royalties were for Bell Hollow songs being played on satellite, internet and college radio during first quarter '08 (they even break down which songs, which outlets, and how many plays). This was my individual reward (I'm registered as a songwriter with BMI), but Nick called to tell me that the band also received a separate check (considerably larger) to our publishing company Woo Sweggin. Nice!
We also finally made it into Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Hollow
Lastly, Nick and I had a quite productive session on Sunday afternoon at our rehearsal space. We worked on our demos, recording my guitars on "Diamonds" and retracking my rhythm parts on "Trip the Fantastic," then doing a little arranging on "Only Candy Knows," "Luna, Luna" and "Babette of Electrons."
I hope we can book some shows soon...I'm getting itchy now that we have nothing on our schedule.

03:03 am - Bell Hollow release second free remix on RCRD LBL
Bell Hollow have just issued another free remix mp3 on the mega-hip RCRD LBL, a sombre and highly cinematic reformulation of "Eyes Like Planets” by Halo33…the perfect soundtrack to a rainy autumn morning.
Halo33 (aka Barrett Hiatt) is known for his drumming skills (both in the past with His Mighty Robot, and with his current trio Revel Hotel), but has received a lot of attention lately for his imaginative Nine Inch Nails remix work.
Download or stream "Eyes Like Planets (Halo33 Remix)" here.
This track is the second in this monthly series of Bell Hollow remixes, to be combined in December’s digital-only "Foxgloves Extras" EP (five03 Records).
Up next: acclaimed indie-pop/hip-hop producer Phofo’s radically bouncy, horn-driven reworking of "Getting On in Years."

Recap of last month's show at Public Assembly...
August 27 was a fun evening, though being a Wednesday, things were kinda more quiet than we'd have liked. I was definitely impressed with how nice a job the club did in upgrading what used to be the grotty back room of Galapagos. The new stage and sound system were great.
As for the music, Silence the Bird and Gold Streets did a fine job of sandwiching us with sonics, Michael Grace played some good tunes, and MC Ben Lerman provided a welcome dose of ukulele-accompanied humor.
 Silence the Bird
 Gold Streets
I ran out for a few minutes in-between sets to grab some food across the street at a Middle Eastern joint called Alia. I had some mint tea and some sort of yummy lentil dish called mujadarra.
We went on second, and for some reason I felt nervous and was not at my best, but in general our set went very well.
Setlist (Bell Hollow): Oh, My Heart Is Stone / Jamais Vu / Eyes Like Planets / The Bottle Tree / Sons of the Burgess Shale / Shukriya Moon / Trip the Fantastic / The Invitation / Copper Crayon / Whirl and Pearl
The final band really blew me away. I kinda liked Death of Fashion (though I never saw them live), but in their new incarnation as Asa Ransom, these guys were riveting. I am not often at a loss for words in describing or comparing bands, but for some reason their stylistic antecedents were more difficult to pin down than usual (perhaps "Metal Box"-era PiL, Wire, Pop Group?). The drummer was an octopus in sunglasses...somehow it came off really cool and not cliched. They were wiry, prickly, sometimes funky, sometimes ominous. Judge for yourself: check out their MySpace or stay tuned for a video clip from the show that Hillary shot.
Setlist (Asa Ransom): The Way We Go / The Luck of Stoney Bowes / Red Dub / Crystal / 12 Mortal Men / Strange Ways / Man with Tuba and Wife / Island

Off to rehearsal after a hard week's work on the Agent Hero project and two nights in a row of parent-teacher meetings at Southdown and Rudi's new school Woodhull (as a fourth grader, he moved up to intermediary).
We've been working on yet more new BH songs: "Eavesdropper" is dark and funky and getting there, "Luna, Luna" as well. Last week we debuted a new song Nick brought in called "Only Candy Knows," which is the sweetest pop confection we've ever played (in a good way...reminded me of The Housemartins or something).
Some photos Hi Fi snapped at last week's practice, in the new compact room we just moved into:
